Garibaldi are damselfish, and are common on shoreline reefs and kelp forests from central California into Baja, Mexico. Male garibaldis cultivate a nest of red algae. A male will circle his nest, clicking loudly to entice females to visit and deposit eggs. The male will fiercely guard such a clutch, chasing away other fish and even biting at divers, until the eggs hatch.
