The Fire Wave at Night, Milky Way and Stars, Valley of Fire State Park
The Milky Way and Stars at Night over the Fire Wave in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada
The Fire Wave in Valley of Fire: an interesting striped expanse of sandstone, now commonly photographed. I wanted to make some uncommon images of the Fire Wave, so I set up my camera with an intervalometer to photograph it all night long. This image shows the Milky Way rising over the horizon with the Fire Wave in the foreground. Distant lights of Las Vegas and nearby urban communities can be seen but the sky above was surprising clear of light pollution. The Valley of Fire sure is a beautiful place!
Cheers and thanks for looking!

Moonset over Fire Wave, Valley of Fire, Nevada
The moon sets over the Fire Wave, a candy-striped bowl of sandstone found in the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada, not far from Las Vegas. Who knew such a a serene and beautiful scene could lie only an hour from the world’s greatest den of depravity and sin? The dichotomy of the two locations is striking. I will be spending two weekends in Las Vegas at volleyball tournaments in coming months and hope to get out to the beautiful Valley of Fire for a hike when I am there. Cheers and thanks for looking!

Moon and Sandstone Arch, Valley of Fire
This is my favorite image from the Valley of Fire. It was incredibly peaceful and quiet with not a speck of wind or noise. The moon was positioned just right to fit nicely into a small cleft in this 10′ natural sandstone arch. While the daytime temps were warm enough that I could wear shorts and t-shirt, once the sun went down I had my long pants, hat and two sweaters on. One of my cameras suddenly started sparking and then spontaneously blew apart when I first photographed this arch under glorious golden morning sunlight. I’m pretty sure it was because the poor sensor could not cope with the incredibly rich and saturated red and orange hues that this gem of an arch exudes when the sun warms it up. I don’t think Canon Professional Services will be covering that one. My remaining camera (coward) insisted that it only be subjected to this arch at night when the color and detail of the scene is more subdued, which is why I ended up with this image. I’m already looking forward to a return to the incredible Valley of Fire State Park when I pass by on my way to Page for a few days of desert landscape photography with some buddies in March!

Do you like how I worked the word incredible into this blog post three times? No, make that four! Incredible! Oops, that’s five. Google loves that.

Windstone Arch, Valley of Fire State Park
Windstone Arch, Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada
An arch within a cave! I’ve seen this interesting spot in Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park referred to as “Windstone Arch”, “Fire Cave”, and a few other names. Admittedly, it is more of a curiosity than a grand inspiring landscape view. While this miniature setting — only about 2.5′ high — is nearly underfoot and very close to a well-traveled road, nevertheless it took me a bit of time to find it. I imagine many people walk or drive right by it without realizing it is there. Its a bit of a squeeze to line up the camera for this view. The arrangement of those round holes reminds me of some of the desert scenes in Star Wars, like they are little cliff dwelling hive-holes from which small winged alien creatures might emerge:

Sunrise, Sandstone and Shadow, Valley of Fire
The Valley of Fire sure lived up to its name on this morning!
I was driving along the main road in Valley of Fire State Park at sunrise on Sunday, heading toward the White Domes area when I saw the top of a impressive sandstone wall receiving the first rays of morning light. The orange/red/yellow color was so intense it stopped me in my tracks. The moon was just setting over the top of the wall as well. I decided to forget about my original plan for a sunrise hike across the mesa and see what photos I could make of this wall. This sort-of self-portrait with my tripod was my favorite of the bunch. The colors on this wall were so saturated at sunrise that I had to desaturate them a fair bit just to keep my computer monitor from spontaneously bursting into flame.

The Fire Wave, Valley of Fire State Park
Photo of the Fire Wave in Valley of Fire State Park
I recently had a chance to see a sandstone formation often called “The Fire Wave“. My daughter and I hiked to this place at sunset, in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada, an hour east of Las Vegas. This was a beautiful spot, not only for this special striated sandstone formation but for the white domes, colorful eroded washes and brilliant red mesas that surrounded us as we enjoyed the fading light and still, warm air.

My guess is that the name “Fire Wave” was bestowed upon this relatively small formation due to its similarity to the more famous “Wave” in North Coyote Buttes Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness a few hours away in Arizona.
Photo of the Paris Hotel Fountain
The Paris Hotel in Las Vegas is most noted for its tall, half-scale replica of the Eiffel Tower. However, it also has a replica of the Arc de Triomphe, a neon-light balloon and a cool fountain at street level as well. Here is the fountain with the balloon in the background, and a bright billboard of two Abercrombie-beautiful models kissing.

Photo of Caesar’s Palace and Jasmine Restaurant
Caesar’s Palace, a Las Vegas landmark, seems so surrounded by other buildings that it was hard to get a decent photo of just the hotel itself. I liked the blue lights in the Bellagio reflection pool illuminating the Jasmine Restaurant with Caesar’s rising in the background.

Photo of the Venetian Hotel and “Phantom”
Well, we were with the kids while in Las Vegas so we did not go to any of the shows we might otherwise hit (Ka, Phantom, O) if we had been there on our own, instead opting for sunny days by the pool and dinner out each night. It was fun walking around Vegas in the evenings and seeing it through kids’ eye, they enjoyed the lights and the sounds and the high energy. We thought the Venetian Hotel looked cool, with its tall banner for Phantom of the Opera hanging over the Strip:

Here is another view of the Bellagio Hotel fountains, this time with the Paris Hotel’s half-scale replica of the Eiffel Tower (yet another Las Vegas landmark) in the background. Bally’s is just seen on the left, and the Planet Hollywood Hotel is on the right.

Photo of the Bellagio Hotel Fountains
One of my favorite attractions in Las Vegas doesn’t cost any money: the superb Bellagio Hotel fountain show in the reflecting pool in front of the Bellagio Hotel on the Strip. Choreographed to music, punctuated with bright lights and showing frequently throughout the day and night, the fountain show is a hit and — a rarity in Vegas — is totally free.
