Exposure For Outdoor Photography, an instructional eBook by Michael Frye, published through Craft & Vision

Last night I read Michael Frye’s new eBook, Exposure for Outdoor Photography, from cover to cover on my iPad, and loved it. As the title suggests, Frye’s ebook covers photographic exposure — and covers it well. As he did in his earlier book “The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite”, Frye writes with a very accessible style. He explains the core components of digital photography — histograms, shutter speed, aperture and ISO — in ways that are well suited to the outdoor photographer who wishes to master exposure in order to produce the best photographs possible. Particularly effective are the ten “Case Studies” that Frye uses to illustrate in detail his recommended best practices for exposure. When does one “expose to the right”? How does one best handle high contrast lighting situations? What about HDR? What to do if the sun is in the frame? How to blur motion effectively to make gorgeous waterfall photographs? All of these situations, and more, are addressed in detail in “Exposure for Outdoor Photography” using beautiful examples from in and around Yosemite National Park, the gem of America’s national park system which Frye has spent a career photographing. I’ve been a photographer for 20 years, experiencing the pursuit of outdoor photography as both an amateur and a professional. While “Exposure for Outdoor Photography” would have done wonders for my exposure skills had it been available to me when I was getting started, I am still trying to learn and improve my craft and thus was pleased to find several valuable ideas in the book that I look forward to putting into practice in my next outing. Cheers!

Exposure for Outdoor Photography, a digital eBook in PDF format suitable for reading on all digital reading devices, is available through Craft & Vision for $5. I consider it a bargain and it comes with my highest recommendation.

Disclaimer: It’s very simple: I like this book and want others to know about it. I was provided with a review copy of this book but immediately purchased it at full price after reading it. I received no compensation or other consideration in exchange for this review. I have no professional or affiliate relationship with Michael Frye or Craft & Vision. I am, however, an keen admirer of Mr. Frye’s photography and books and have been for many years, and I carry his earlier book, “The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite”, on every visit I make to Yosemite National Park.
