Vogelsang Reflections - Yosemite National Park
Vogelsang High Sierra Camp and Tuolumne Meadows
My dad and I spent a great several days hiking around Tuolumne Meadows and Vogelsang High Sierra Camp. Vogelsang is one of my favorite areas of the Sierra Nevada, a series of 10,000′ basins filled with beautiful lakes and boasting many 11,000′ and 12,000′ peaks. We had spectacular weather, no mosquitoes, and bagged a new peak and at least a half dozen lakes. I shot this video with a Canon 5D Mark II and the time lapse was shot with a Canon 1Ds Mark III camera, 1300+ frames over two hours to produce about 25 seconds of time lapse video. The video was an exercise to test the function of the Sennheiser MKE 400 mic in an outdoor setting. It worked reasonably well. You can tell I did not get my video perfectly level on some shots — live and learn. Life is good!

Gorgeous stuff, Phil. I’m sure you know a DeadCat is useful in eliminating wind noise. http://www.rodemic.com/accessory.php?product=DeadCat Your panning technique seems to have met with success since Orick. Great job!

Many thanks John, I plan to get a dead cat. A fellow had one in Antarctica and liked it. I just did not have time to grab one before my trip, but next time for sure.

Great footage Phil! I especially like the timing on the time-lapse, ending it just as sunrise hit the waterline. Did you have a geared ball head for your smooth panning or was that just practice and a steady hand? Getting the external mic was key for my video work with the 5dm2, now is just the tradeoff of video or still… ;-)

Thanks Greg. The mic sure helps, it is amazing how much the built-in mic on the camera is affected by even the slightest breeze. As for the pans, I used the “Ken Burns effect” available in iMovie on my Mac. I don’t think I will ever be able to do a perfect pan using my hands, I am way too unsteady. I had to end the time-lapse at the point, because breakfast at camp was almost over and I was running late as it was, I almost missed it — so the timing was just a lucky coincidence. Pancakes trump photos.
