Wind turbines, in the San Gorgonio Pass, near Interstate 10 provide electricity to Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. California, USA, natural history stock photograph, photo id 22238
An excellent alternative energy source, wind turbines can stand 150 feet tall, weigh 30,000 - 45,000 pounds and generate 300 kilowatts per hour (at a cost approaching $0.05 per kWh), equal to the amount of electricity used by a typical house each month. The towers are engineered in collaboration with NASA and supported by state and federal grants. They require wind speeds of 13 mph (21 km/h) on average. Over 4000 turbines are installed in the San Gorgonio pass near Palm Springs.
