The San Juan River actively cuts through this massive, arch-like structure, exposing deep canyon walls over 800 feet high made of the marine Honaker Trail Formation. The anticline is part of the larger Monument Upwarp in the Colorado Plateau. It sits just west of the prominent Comb Ridge monocline. The ridge is composed of Pennsylvanian-era limestones, siltstones, and shales that originated in ancient, shallow marine environments
