{"id":343,"date":"2007-06-21T00:00:01","date_gmt":"2007-06-21T08:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oceanlight.com\/portfolio\/haleakala-silversword\/"},"modified":"2019-08-05T08:53:00","modified_gmt":"2019-08-05T00:53:00","slug":"haleakala-silversword","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oceanlight.com\/log\/haleakala-silversword.html","title":{"rendered":"Photo of Haleakala Silversword"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>High atop Haleakala volcano on the island of Maui lives the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oceanlight.com\/silversword_photo.html\">Haleakala Silversword<\/a> (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oceanlight.com\/lightbox.php?sp=Argyroxiphium_sandwicense_macrocephalum\">Argyroxiphium sandwicense macrocephalum<\/a><\/em>). This remarkable plant lives only in the crater and on the slopes of Haleakala, above 6800&#8242; (2100m). The silversword grows from seed and lives from 15 to 50 years. At the end of its life it forms a dramatic blooming stalk, however since the flowering season is June to September, and my visits to Maui have always coincided with humpback season (January through May) I&#8217;ve never been able to photograph the blooming phase.
