An excellent alternative energy source, wind turbines can stand 150 feet tall, weigh 30,000 - 45,000 pounds and generate 300 kilowatts per hour (at a cost approaching $0.05 per kWh), equal to the amount of electricity used by a typical house each month. The towers are engineered in collaboration with NASA and supported by state and federal grants. They require wind speeds of 13 mph (21 km/h) on average. Over 4000 turbines are installed in the San Gorgonio pass near Palm Springs.
