One of the most picturesque geysers in the world, Riverside Geyser is located in the Upper Geyser Basin. Riverside is a cone-type geyser. Its sinter base sits alongside the Firehole River and its eruptions arc over the river with a forested hillside as a backdrop. Riverside Geyser eruptions are preceded by a one to two hour prelude in which water overflows the geyser cone and flows into the river, typically culminating in some bubbling and splashing from a secondary vent that signals an imminent eruption. Its eruptions last about 20 minutes, with a steam phase following the eruption. Riverside Geyser intervals, which run about six hours on average, are actually distributed bimodally with modal centers about either 5.5 hours (short mode) or 6.5 hours (long mode). Riverside Geyser is viewed from across the Firehole River. It lies about 1 mile from the Old Faithful area on a pleasant trail taking one by many other geysers, pools and the Firehole River.
