The principal food sources for sperm whales include deep sea squid and mesopelagic octopus. We found several specimens of freshly eaten octopus during a filming trip in the Azores. These octopus had their heads completely bitten off, and most of their tentacles were bitten off or heavily damaged. Without tentacles and head, these specimens were still large, approximately 2 - 5 feet across. |
 |
| In the Azores lives a young WHITE sperm whale, a true Moby Dick. During our 1997 Tokyo Broadcasting System filming project, we encountered this whale briefly and obtained a few still photographs and underwater video of it. |
