Burrowing owl (Western North American race hypugaea). This 10-inch-tall burrowing owl is standing besides its burrow. These burrows are usually created by squirrels, prairie dogs, or other rodents and even turtles, and only rarely dug by the owl itself, Athene cunicularia, Athene cunicularia hypugaea, Salton Sea, Imperial County, California Imperial shag or blue-eyed shag, in tussock grass.  The Imperial Shag is about 30" long and 4-8 lbs, with males averaging larger than females.  It can dive as deep as 80' while foraging for small benthic fish, crustaceans, polychaetes, gastropods and octopuses, Phalacrocorax atriceps, Leucocarbo atriceps, New Island Imperial shag or blue-eyed shag, in tussock grass.  The Imperial Shag is about 30" long and 4-8 lbs, with males averaging larger than females.
