Bosque Del Apache NWR, New Mexico, 2010
Skip and I made a short trip to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, in New Mexico, to photograph snow geese (Chen caerulescens) and sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis). This is strictly bird photography and has essentially nothing to do with the marine subjects that I really prefer. But its cheap, easy and fun, and is good practice for the real thing, so I’ve joined Skip at Bosque del Apache a couple times now. Here are a few photos from this year’s visit:

Gorgeous shots — love the variety of closeups, wide angles, and pans. Great backgrounds and bokeh too. What an amazing experience it must be to see that migration!

Thanks Della. I really didn’t see the “migration” — these birds have already arrived at BDANWR and will reside there for a while. So, they are essentially at one end of their migration. But it is great to see so many birds in one place, with such concentrations

Really beautiful images! The numbers of these birds during the winter is astounding. I especially like the snow goose calling while its in flight. I haven’t seen too many images like that — it really stands out!

Amazing images. I’ve been in New Mexico deserts many times. But I’ve never been in this area. Such a shame. Should go there ….
