Convict Lake Sunrise, Eastern Sierra Nevada, California
Convict Lake is a small lake at the foot of Laurel Mountain and Mount Morrison, in the Sherwin Range of the Sierra Nevada, California. Convict Lake is named for a group of convicts that escaped from Carson City, fled to and were apprehended after a shootout. Convict Lake is a popular fishing lake in the summer and is frequently stocked with trout. I happened to make two early morning stops at Convict Lake this summer, and these are the sunrises that I saw there:

Cool shots Phil. These look like two completely different locations. Is it crowded here at sunrise like North Lake? The top image looks similar to the type of lighting you get at North Lake.

Both times I have shot at Convict Lake I have been alone or with just my friend. I think North Lake is a zoo in the fall because it is also a spot for fall colors so all the fall color groups, tours, individuals go there to shoot sunrise since they are there anyway. Remember your nunchuks next time you visit North Lake in fall to ensure you have some room around you to shoot. :)

I may have to work on some Muy Thai elbows before going to North Lake again in case the photographers try to push me off my space again. Too many idiots up there.

Great images, as always, Phil! Convict Lake is one of my favorite sunrise locations in the eastern Sierra.
To answer Richard’s question…I was all by myself (save for 2 fishermen) at Convict Lake last during the “madness” at North Lake. Honestly, that view isn’t even worth it to me.
